Science Chapter 4 Test Study Guide

Chapter 4 Test Study Guide

Tuesday, November 27

Vocabulary (matching)-erosion, physical weathering, chemical weathering, deposition, mass wasting, earthquake, fault, lava, magma, volcano

Labeling—be able to label a diagram with terms/vocabulary word—for example, types of tectonic plate boundaries, formations

Describe the theory of plate tectonics

Types of plate boundaries—how they are similar and different—convergent, divergent, and transform

Causes of tectonic plate movement and an understanding of what each is—subduction and convection

Types of mountains formed at different plate boundaries—mid-ocean ridges, volcanic arcs, and folded mountain ranges

Lithosphere/Asthenosphere-define each and know the components

How and where volcanoes are formed

Earthquakes—what they are, what causes them, and where they occur (in general by a fault, most often at a plate boundary)

How weathering, erosion, and deposition work together

Erosion—different forces (wind, water, organisms, glaciers) that cause erosion—differences in how these forces erode if the landscape changes (ie—rivers are able to carry heavier sediment if they move faster

Deposition—what causes it to occur (something slows down), what can be formed (deltas), what deposited first (larger sediment)

Chapter 4 Science Test – Tuesday, Nov 27

The chapter 4 science test will be Tuesday, November 27th. Students have been learning about the Earth’s surface. The study guide will be sent home before break.

Ch.3 Science Test Study Guide

Chapter 3 Test Study Guide

Monday, November 5th

Vocabulary (matching)—atmosphere, biosphere, climate, condensation, evaporation, geosphere, groundwater, hydrosphere, mineral, precipitation, rock, rock cycle, transpiration, weather, uplift

Four systems of Earth—biosphere, atmosphere, geosphere, hydrosphere—be able to define and describe each in detail—layers of atmosphere/geosphere and characteristics of each layer, how water is distributed in hydrosphere, interactions between systems (examples in notes and HW)

Types of rocks—igneous, sedimentary, metamorphic—how each forms and how the rock cycle can turn any one kind into another

Weather vs. climate—how are these two terms different

How water vapor enters the atmosphere—evaporation, transpiration, cellular respiration (what each is)

Changing states of water—liquid to gas (evaporation), gas to liquid (condensation)—energy ultimately comes from Sun

Science Test – Monday, November 5th

The chapter 3 science test will be Monday, November 5th. Chapter 3 teaches about our planet Earth. Earth systems (atmosphere, hydrosphere, geosphere and biosphere) and interactions of the Earth systems (water cycle and rock cycle) are major concepts. I will send home a study guide on Thursday, November 1st.

Quarter 1 Science Exam – Thursday, October 25th

The Quarter 1 science exam will be on Thursday, October 25th. This will cover the Methods of Science chapter – Chapter 2. Students may use their science binder to review and study for the test.

Chapter 2 Science Study Guide

Chapter 2 Test Study Guide

Wednesday, October 17

Vocabulary (matching)—asteroid, Big Bang, clusters, comet, dwarf planet, equinox, galaxy, light-year, meteor, Milky Way, planet, revolution, rotation, solstice, star, waning, waxing

Eclipses—be able to draw the location of the Sun, Earth and the Moon for both solar and lunar eclipses—describe what an eclipse is and how these 2 types are similar

Compare/Contrast planets (inner/outer) and the Earth to other objects/planets in the solar system

Describe motions of the earth (revolution and rotation)—what each does and how long each takes

Based on the position of the Earth, determine the season experienced by the northern and southern hemispheres

Describe the structure/organization of the universe

Chapter 2 Science Test

The chapter 2 science test will be Wednesday, October 17th. Chapter 2 teaches about Earth in space. We learn about The Sun-Earth-Moon system, the solar system, stars, galaxies, and the universe. I will send home the review prior to the test and we will review in class on Tuesday, Oct. 16th.

Chapter 1 Science Test – Study Guide

Chapter 1 Test Study Guide

Friday, October 5

Vocabulary—matching (types of maps, latitude, longitude, scale, time zone, slope, legend, etc)

Using a map—what type of projection (conical vs. cylindrical and distortions of each), locating points using latitude/longitude, give coordinates of points, using scale to determine distance, comparing views (profile vs. map)

Topographic Maps—create a profile, interpret contour lines

Chapter 1 Science Test on Friday, October 5th

Throughout chapter 1 students have been learning about mapping Earth. We have been learning about different types of maps, how and why maps are used, creating our own maps, interpreting information from maps and learning about how technology is involved when creating maps.  The chapter 1 test will be Friday, October 5th. Please note: The study guide will be handed out during class and we will review before we test.

Methods of Science Unit

The first chapter in our science textbook focuses on what science and scientific inquiry are and learning about scientific measurement and tools. Please feel free to go over the material in the textbook and the homework assignments with your child at home. The chapter pages are numbered with NOS in this first unit.
