Vocabulary (matching)—asteroid, Big Bang, clusters, comet, dwarf planet, equinox, galaxy, light-year, meteor, Milky Way, planet, revolution, rotation, solstice, star, waning, waxing
Eclipses—be able to draw the location of the Sun, Earth and the Moon for both solar and lunar eclipses—describe what an eclipse is and how these 2 types are similar
Compare/Contrast planets (inner/outer) and the Earth to other objects/planets in the solar system
Describe motions of the earth (revolution and rotation)—what each does and how long each takes
Based on the position of the Earth, determine the season experienced by the northern and southern hemispheres
Describe the structure/organization of the universe
Chapter 2 Science Test
The chapter 2 science test will be Wednesday, October 17th. Chapter 2 teaches about Earth in space. We learn about The Sun-Earth-Moon system, the solar system, stars, galaxies, and the universe. I will send home the review prior to the test and we will review in class on Tuesday, Oct. 16th.
First Quarter History Exam
Fifth graders will take the exam for the first quarter on Wednesday, Oct. 17th. It is a cumulative test that covers all material studied in history class this year. Students should review their notes, answers to homework questions, and vocabulary lists. All students will take home their history binders today, so that they can begin preparing for the exam.

Vocabulary—matching (types of maps, latitude, longitude, scale, time zone, slope, legend, etc)
Using a map—what type of projection (conical vs. cylindrical and distortions of each), locating points using latitude/longitude, give coordinates of points, using scale to determine distance, comparing views (profile vs. map)
Topographic Maps—create a profile, interpret contour lines

History Quiz on Thursday, Oct. 4th, 2018
Fifth graders will take a history quiz on the Prologue and Chapter 1 of The Story of Ancient Egypt on Thursday, Oct. 4th, 2018. The quiz will also cover their vocabulary list.
