October is a busy month in 5th grade language arts! The beginning of October brings the end of our time with Gilgamesh the Hero. As we end our Gilgamesh unit, the students will be writing their first paragraph of 5th grade. In addition, they will be taking a test on October 8th. Through both of these activities, students will be able to reflect on our two major explorations in our story: is Gilgamesh and hero and does Gilgamesh display hubris? The study guide for that test is can be found here: Gilgamesh test study guide.
The end of Gilgamesh bring with it the beginning of our time with the classic tale The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. Throughout that text, we will look at how an author creates mood through word choice and setting description. We will also compile textual evidence to make an inference about the mysterious end of the story.
We will end the month of October with the beginning of The Prince of the Pauper, during which we will identify textual evidence to support many themes throughout the text. More information about those themes will be included in the November website update.
See the attached flyer for more information about this upcoming opportunity.
Fifth graders will take a history quiz on the Prologue and Chapter 1 of The Story of Ancient Egypt on Thursday, Oct. 4th, 2018. The quiz will also cover their vocabulary list.
Throughout chapter 1 students have been learning about mapping Earth. We have been learning about different types of maps, how and why maps are used, creating our own maps, interpreting information from maps and learning about how technology is involved when creating maps. The chapter 1 test will be Friday, October 5th. Please note: The study guide will be handed out during class and we will review before we test.
In honor of Homecoming, all students may participate in a non-uniform Nova Spirit Day on Friday, Sept. 28. Students may wear t-shirts/jerseys form Nova sports teams, clubs, plays, and extracurricular activities, as well as Nova t-shirts and sweaters. Students must wear uniform bottoms.
On Tuesday, Sept. 29, all fifth graders will receive their copies of The Story of Ancient Egypt by Suzanne Art as we start our new unit. These relatively new books include colored photographs and illustrations. Please treat yourself to a look at this book, and remind your children to take good care of these beautiful textbooks. Thank you!
Regarding homework, starting on Tuesday, students will answer assigned questions that are found at the end of the chapters. All questions should be answered in complete sentences, so that they will be more useful as study guides for quizzes.
