The first quarter for this school year ends on Friday, Oct. 26th. Please remind your fifth grader to turn in any missing work due to absences. Also, students with late homework assignments should show teachers any missing work that is still eligible for partial credit.

The Quarter 1 science exam will be on Thursday, October 25th. This will cover the Methods of Science chapter – Chapter 2. Students may use their science binder to review and study for the test.
Chapter 2 Test Study Guide
Wednesday, October 17
Vocabulary (matching)—asteroid, Big Bang, clusters, comet, dwarf planet, equinox, galaxy, light-year, meteor, Milky Way, planet, revolution, rotation, solstice, star, waning, waxing
Eclipses—be able to draw the location of the Sun, Earth and the Moon for both solar and lunar eclipses—describe what an eclipse is and how these 2 types are similar
Compare/Contrast planets (inner/outer) and the Earth to other objects/planets in the solar system
Describe motions of the earth (revolution and rotation)—what each does and how long each takes
Based on the position of the Earth, determine the season experienced by the northern and southern hemispheres
Describe the structure/organization of the universe
The chapter 2 science test will be Wednesday, October 17th. Chapter 2 teaches about Earth in space. We learn about The Sun-Earth-Moon system, the solar system, stars, galaxies, and the universe. I will send home the review prior to the test and we will review in class on Tuesday, Oct. 16th.
Chapter 1 Test Study Guide

Vocabulary—matching (types of maps, latitude, longitude, scale, time zone, slope, legend, etc)
Using a map—what type of projection (conical vs. cylindrical and distortions of each), locating points using latitude/longitude, give coordinates of points, using scale to determine distance, comparing views (profile vs. map)
Topographic Maps—create a profile, interpret contour lines
October is a busy month in 5th grade language arts! The beginning of October brings the end of our time with Gilgamesh the Hero. As we end our Gilgamesh unit, the students will be writing their first paragraph of 5th grade. In addition, they will be taking a test on October 8th. Through both of these activities, students will be able to reflect on our two major explorations in our story: is Gilgamesh and hero and does Gilgamesh display hubris? The end of Gilgamesh bring with it the beginning of our time with the classic tale The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. Throughout that text, we will look at how an author creates mood through word choice and setting description. We will also compile textual evidence to make an inference about the mysterious end of the story.
We will end the month of October with the beginning of The Prince of the Pauper, during which we will identify textual evidence to support many themes throughout the text. More information about those themes will be included in the November website update.
