Chapter 1 Science Test on Friday, October 5th

Throughout chapter 1 students have been learning about mapping Earth. Please note: The study guide will be handed out during class and we will review before we test.

SPIRIT WEAR DAY!

In honor of Homecoming, all students may participate in a non-uniform Nova Spirit Day on Friday, Sept. 28.  Students may wear t-shirts/jerseys form Nova sports teams, clubs, plays, and extracurricular activities, as well as Nova t-shirts and sweaters.  Students must wear uniform bottoms.

Ancient Egypt

On Tuesday, Sept. 29, all fifth graders will receive their copies of The Story of Ancient Egypt by Suzanne Art as we start our new unit.  These relatively new books include colored photographs and illustrations.  Please treat yourself to a look at this book, and remind your children to take good care of these beautiful textbooks.  Thank you!

Regarding homework, starting on Tuesday, students will answer assigned questions that are found at the end of the chapters.  All questions should be answered in complete sentences, so that they will be more useful as study guides for quizzes.

Language arts in September

The school year started with a “literary boot camp” in language arts. We spent the first few weeks learning about many of the literary devices that we will apply to texts this year, including the dramatic story arc, mood, theme, and foreshadowing. We read many short stories and fairy tales in order to learn more about these various devices. We recently started Gilgamesh the Hero, which is a rewriting of one of the world’s oldest stories. Throughout this text, we will be questioning whether Gilgamesh could be found guilty of hubris and whether Gilgamesh should be considered a hero. We will continue our journey with Gilgamesh right on into October.

Assembly, Homecoming, and Spirit Wear

The time of September’s virtue assembly has been changed to Friday, September 28 @ 9-930am (instead of at 3pm). The 5th graders are the Sayers of the Truth and are excited to share their skits related to fortitude in Aesop’s fables.

In addition, in honor of Homecoming, all students and staff K-12 are invited to participate in a non-uniform Nova Spirit Day on Friday, September 28! Students and staff may wear t-shirts/jerseys from Nova sports teams, clubs, plays, extracurricular activities, Nova t-shirts or sweatshirts, or school colors! They should still wear uniform bottoms.

Picture Day

Good afternoon, Nova families!

As a reminder, Picture Day is on  Tuesday, September 18th! Order forms will be sent home with students tomorrow and extras can be found in the lower school office. You can also order online by clicking this link. You will need to know your child’s student ID number to place an online order. This can be found in Infinite Campus on the top of the screen near their picture. If you have trouble logging into Infinite Campus, try using the “forgot username” or “forgot password” buttons on the login screen. If those don’t work, let me know and I can help you with your account.

For both paper and online orders you will need to fill out a separate order form for each student. Students paying by cash or check should bring their order form and payment with them at the time they get their picture taken. Do not turn order forms in to the office. Students paying online do NOT need to bring a receipt or proof of purchase with them on picture day

All students need to get their picture taken and are required to be in full uniform. Picture retake day will be on Tuesday, October 23rd.

Don’t hesitate to reach out with any questions!

Best,
